The One Change That Makes a Ceiling Look Custom

A flat ceiling reads as builder-grade no matter how good the rest of the room is. Beams are the cheapest way to change that. They add height, warmth and a sense that the house was designed rather than assembled — and in most Orlando homes the whole job is done in a single day, with no structural work and no damage to the ceiling.

Inka installs decorative beam ceilings throughout Orlando and Central Florida: straight parallel runs over a kitchen or great room, full coffered grids, and angled installations on vaulted and cathedral ceilings. Every beam is measured and cut on site, because no two ceilings are actually square.

Beam Types We Install

Faux beams (high-density polyurethane). Moulded from real timber, so the grain and saw marks are genuine impressions. Light enough for one person to hold in place, which keeps labor down and makes them the practical choice for high ceilings. They will not warp, crack or attract termites — worth something in Florida humidity.

Box beams (solid wood). Built from real boards into a hollow three-sided beam. Heavier and more expensive, but it is actual wood, so it takes stain the way furniture does and ages like furniture too. This is the choice when the beams sit near cabinetry that has to match.

Coffered grids. Beams running both directions to form recessed panels. The most dramatic option and the most demanding to install, because every intersection is cut and fitted individually. Best suited to rooms with at least nine-foot ceilings.

Wood Ceiling Beam Cost in Orlando

Beam work is priced per linear foot installed, not per beam, because beams have no standard length.

As a reference point, a typical great room with four to six beams usually lands between $2,400 and $6,500 installed. Ceiling height, access and whether the ceiling is flat or vaulted move the number more than anything else. Estimates are free and hold for 30 days.

How the Install Works

  1. Measure on site. Ceiling height, joist direction and pitch. Photos and a sketch so you can see the layout before anything is ordered.
  2. Choose material and finish. Faux or wood, then the stain — matched to a physical sample, not a screen.
  3. Blocking. Mounting cleats fastened into the ceiling joists. This is the part that decides whether a beam stays straight for twenty years.
  4. Install and finish. Beams set, seams filled, ends capped and touched up. Site cleaned before we leave.

Where the Beams Usually Go

The rooms that get the most out of beams in Central Florida homes are great rooms with high or vaulted ceilings, kitchens where the beams run over the island, primary bedrooms, covered lanais and outdoor kitchens, and entryways where a single short run sets the tone for the house.

Wood Ceiling Beam FAQ

How much do wood ceiling beams cost in Orlando?

Most projects land between $45 and $110 per linear foot installed. Lightweight faux beams sit at the lower end; solid wood box beams built on site run higher. A typical great room with four to six beams usually falls between $2,400 and $6,500 installed.

Are faux wood beams real wood?

There are two kinds. High-density polyurethane beams are moulded from real timber, so the grain and saw marks are real impressions — but the material is not wood. Box beams are built from actual wood boards into a hollow three-sided beam. Both look identical once installed; the difference is weight, price and how they are mounted. We will tell you plainly which one you are getting.

Do ceiling beams require structural work?

Decorative beams do not. They are hollow and light, mounted to blocking fastened into the existing ceiling joists — no structural change, no engineering, no permit in most cases. Only true structural timber requires an engineer, and that is a different scope entirely.

How long does the installation take?

A straight run of four to six beams in one room is usually a single day. A full coffered grid takes two to three days, because every intersection is cut and fitted on site.

Can beams go on a vaulted or cathedral ceiling?

Yes — those are among the most common beam projects. The cuts at the ridge and at the wall are angled to match the pitch, measured on site before anything is fabricated.

What stain colors are available?

Light oak, natural pine, weathered gray, walnut and espresso are the common choices in Central Florida. Beams can also be finished to match existing cabinetry or flooring — done with a physical sample before the full order.

Will beams make my ceiling look lower?

Counterintuitively, no. Beams break the ceiling into sections, and the eye reads the recessed panels between them as depth. On ceilings under eight feet we would talk you out of it; above nine feet the effect is the opposite of lowering.
