A built-in is cabinetry that is fastened to the wall and finished to the wall — scribed to the drywall, trimmed to the ceiling or crown, with no gap behind it and no visible sides. A bookcase you buy sits in a room. A built-in becomes part of the room. That is why the same shelves cost more built in than bought, and why they raise the value of the house instead of leaving with you.
We build them two ways in Orlando. From scratch, in paint-grade poplar and MDF or stain-grade oak, maple and walnut. Or as an IKEA built-in: BESTA, PAX or BILLY units boxed in with a face frame, fillers, crown and a painted finish. From across the room they are the same piece of furniture. The IKEA route costs about a third less, and we will tell you honestly when it is the right call.
Built-in shelving wall — adjustable shelves over a drawer bank, scribed to the wall and ceiling.
Bookshelves and library walls. Floor-to-ceiling shelving, with or without lower cabinets, a rolling ladder if the ceiling earns one. The most requested built-in in Winter Park and Maitland homes.
Entertainment centers and media walls. Cabinetry around a TV or fireplace, with lower doors and drawers for the equipment, cable routing planned before the first cut, and LED lighting in the open shelves.
Home office built-ins. Desk with a filing bank, uppers with doors, open shelving above. Two-person layouts for the rooms that turned into offices after 2020.
Window seats and mudroom benches. Bench with lift-up or drawer storage, cubbies, hooks and an upper shelf. Scribed into the alcove so it looks original to the house.
Closet and wardrobe built-ins. Reach-in and walk-in systems, PAX-based or fully custom — see custom closets and IKEA PAX installation.
Pantry and laundry built-ins. Floor-to-ceiling storage in the spaces that never get real cabinetry — see pantry installation.
Built-ins are quoted per wall or per unit, not per square foot. Width, ceiling height, doors and drawers versus open shelving, and painted versus stained move the number more than anything else. Most Orlando projects land between $1,800 and $7,000 installed.
| Project | Typical installed price | On site |
|---|---|---|
| Bookshelf wall, painted, open shelving (8 ft wide) | $1,800 – $3,500 | 2 – 3 days |
| Bookshelf wall with lower cabinets, doors and drawers | $3,000 – $5,000 | 3 – 4 days |
| Entertainment center / media wall around TV or fireplace | $2,500 – $7,000 | 3 – 5 days |
| Home office built-in (desk, filing bank, uppers) | $3,000 – $7,500 | 4 – 6 days |
| Window seat or mudroom bench with cubbies | $1,500 – $3,500 | 2 – 3 days |
| IKEA BESTA / BILLY turned into a built-in | $1,200 – $3,000 + units | 1 – 3 days |
Stain-grade wood adds roughly 25 to 40 percent over paint-grade. Lighting, glass doors and a rolling ladder are quoted as line items so you can see what each one costs. Estimates are free and hold for 30 days.
Painted poplar and MDF is what most Central Florida homes want. It matches the existing trim and baseboard, hides joints, and takes a color change later. Stained oak, maple or walnut shows grain and costs more, and it is the right call when the room already has wood floors or beams to match. We match a physical sample, never a screen, and we will say plainly when a stain will not match what you already have.
Living rooms and family rooms with a TV wall, home offices and studies, dining rooms that want a buffet or bar, bedrooms with an unused alcove, and the mudroom or laundry that never got real cabinetry. Ceiling height is not a constraint here the way it is for a coffered ceiling — built-ins work at eight feet.

Built-ins are quoted per wall or per unit, not per square foot. Most Orlando projects land between $1,800 and $7,000 installed. A single bookshelf wall with a painted finish sits near the bottom; a full media wall with a fireplace surround, lower cabinets with doors and drawers, and lighting sits near the top. Estimates are free and hold for 30 days.
Both. We build paint-grade and stain-grade built-ins from scratch for shelving walls, window seats and offices. When a project suits it, we also turn IKEA BESTA, PAX or BILLY units into a built-in with a face frame, filler panels, crown and a painted finish. It costs less and looks the same from across the room. We tell you which route we recommend and why.
Two to five days on site for a typical bookshelf wall or entertainment center. A home office with desk, uppers and a filing bank runs about a week. Painting adds one to two days depending on drying time.
Yes. Media walls around a TV or fireplace are the most common built-in we do in Orlando. We plan cable routing, outlet placement and ventilation for the equipment before anything is built, so nothing is cut into a finished panel later.
Painted built-ins in poplar and MDF are most common in Central Florida and match existing trim. Stain-grade oak, maple or walnut costs more and shows the grain. We match a physical sample, not a screen.
No. Built-ins are millwork fastened to the wall studs, not structural work. Adding an outlet inside a media wall is a small electrical job we coordinate with a licensed electrician.
