A coffered ceiling is a grid of beams running in both directions, forming recessed panels overhead. It is the single most architectural thing you can add to a room without moving a wall — and unlike a straight beam run, it changes the geometry of the space rather than just decorating it.
The panels catch light and shadow, which is why a coffered ceiling reads as depth instead of weight. Done right, the room feels taller. Done in a room with the wrong ceiling height, it feels like a low garage. That distinction is most of the job.

Painted white, two-tone, or a dark grid — the look is mostly finish, not a different construction. These are style references so you can point to a direction before we measure the room. The photo above is a recent Orlando install of ours.
Coffered ceilings are quoted per room, not per linear foot. The grid layout drives the labor far more than the square footage does — every intersection is cut and fitted individually, so a nine-panel grid is much more work than a four-panel grid in the same room.
Ceiling height, access and whether the room already has a tray move the number more than anything else. Estimates are free and hold for 30 days.
Nine feet is the practical minimum. At nine feet the beams project about five to six inches and the room still breathes. Below nine feet a coffered grid starts to close the room in — and we will say so rather than sell it to you. Ten feet and up is where it looks best.
If your ceiling is under nine feet, a straight beam run gives you most of the character with none of the crowding. It is the honest recommendation for a low room, and it costs less.

These combine. Many of our Orlando installs are a coffered grid built inside an existing tray, which is exactly what the ceiling in the photo above is.
The grid is laid out around what is already in the ceiling, not the other way around. Recessed lights land inside panels; a fan or chandelier is centered in a panel rather than cut through a beam. Occasionally a light has to move a few inches to sit cleanly — that gets decided on paper, before anything is fabricated.

We install both. High-density faux beams are moulded from real timber — the grain and saw marks are genuine impressions, but the material is not wood. Box beams are built from actual boards.
